Tran-X is a long established brand known across the globe as a specialist in the entry level motorsport market. Concentrating heavily on the core motorsport transmission components, especially those used in Escorts and other Ford based vehicles. Tran-X has long been thought of as the ‘go-to’ supplier for many motorsport competitors.
When the opportunity arose, Quaife Engineering jumped at the chance to acquire the strong Tran-X brand. The new Tran-X Powered by Quaife brand now gives all involved with Clubman motorsport the confidence to continue competing with Tran-X drivetrain components with the knowledge that they are now supported by Quaife’s 50 year heritage in all levels of motorsport design and manufacturing.
The Quaife Automatic Torque Biasing differential is known around the world as the leader in helical gear differentials and with over 350 variants available and over 4000 units on the shelf in our Kent factory at any given time, we are the obvious choice for the discerning driver.
Despite our Worldwide presence in motorsport, our Tran-X plate-type LSD is less well known but is still a key part of our motorsport product range. Since its incorporation into the Quaife family of products, theTran-X Powered by Quaife brand has grown year-on-year to become a must-have for the Clubman driver.
See below for more details on both.
Quaife Automatic Torque Biasing Differential (ATB)
Fully compatible with manufacturer electronic traction control and anti-lock braking systems, the Quaife ATB differential offers a number of key advantages in both functionality and service life compared to conventional plate-style LSD units.
Silent in operation (even during low-speed parking manoeuvres) the Quaife ATB diff never ‘locks,’ making it progressive, safe and user friendly. Unlike plate-style LSD designs there are no clutches, ramps, springs or other wear prone components to replace at regular intervals, because the Quaife ATB’s well-proven system of helical gears is extremely durable, plus it’s designed to use standard transmission oils.
This makes the Quaife ATB differential a genuine ‘fit and forget’ upgrade that offers compromise-free performance and unbeatable reliability on the street, strip, stage or circuit, backed by limited lifetime warranty.
Precision manufactured from certified steel billets and inspected to ISO9001-2008 standards, the key performance features of the Quaife ATB helical gear differential include:
- Safe, progressive and seamless in action, the Quaife ATB differential never ‘locks’
- Controlled power is transmitted to all driven wheels, to maximise traction and minimise wheelspin, particularly in slippery conditions
- Fitment greatly reduces unwanted torque steer, understeer or oversteer
- Designed to work in harmony with road car electronic stability and traction control programs
- Improves braking performance on front wheel drive cars by reducing lock up and minimising ABS intrusion due to torque transfer action
- Reduces tyre wear, especially on front wheel drive cars
- Gear operated with no service components to replace – ever
- Direct replacement for factory standard ‘open’ differential unit
- Retains normal axle lubrication systems and maintenance schedule
- Over 100,000 units sold worldwide since the 1980’s
• Backed by a Quaife lifetime warranty for both motorsport and road use

Tran-X Powered by Quaife Limited Slip Differential (LSD)
Fully interchangeable with the standard ‘open’ differential, the Tran-X Powered by Quaife limited slip plate differential comes with a choice of ramp angles and preloads and is the ideal choice for motorsport use where uneven surfaces and the ability to tune the characteristics to the individual conditions are required.
The preload in the differential is controlled by a Belleville spring washer and a series of internal and external plates which connect to the side gears and diff body respectively to create friction (preload) between the two driven shafts. The Differential begins in a locked state, splitting the power evenly between the two wheels until the torque difference, generated by variations in traction, from one wheel to the other overcomes the preload and the plates slip (hence Limited Slip Differential). Once ‘slipping’, the wheels of the vehicle are turning at differing speeds to each other along with the side gears and planet gears. The planet gears sit on supporting cross pins and these in turn sit in the bottom of a pair of ramps. As the planet gears turn against the side gears, the pins move up the ramps, splitting apart the reaction rings and increasing the preload in the differential which serves to lock the differential once again. Changing the ramp angles in the reaction rings changes the rate at which the differential returns to a locked (non-slipping) state.
Precision manufactured from certified steel billets and inspected to ISO9001-2008 standards, the key performance features of the Tran-X Powered by Quaife LSD plate-type differential include:
- Highly tuneable to suit both vehicle and driving conditions
- Drive maintained to both wheels even in zero traction conditions
- Wide Choice of ramp angles available including two ramp sets per reaction ring (not available on Salisbury type LSDs)
- Re-engineered to update the design and manufacture to Quaife Engineering quality standards
- Ideal for Classic cars prepared to homologated Historic regulations where ATB differentials were not originally available
- Particularly suited to rear wheel drive cars and front wheel drive cars on loose surfaces
- Service kits and tuning kits available for regular maintenance
- Direct replacement for factory standard ‘open’ differential unit
