It’s Double Silverstone Silverware for Freddie Lee

??????????????

This weekend saw the ‘Pick-up truck’ championship competing at Silverstone for rounds 12, 13 and 14 of the season.

Following the move to a ‘Pro1 SHP Pickup truck’ the season so far was proving to be a trying one for young Freddie Lee with a number of technical issues and race damage hampering his championship challenge.

Fortunately Freddie’s natural race talent, together with his youthful exuberance, has kept him focused on the task and he has demonstrated that whilst he may be only 17, he has the maturity and confidence to drive round problems and deliver a constant stream of feedback and suggestion to keep pushing forward and deliver some good mid pack race results whilst settling the team and truck into this championship.

Freddie says: ‘Winning the Pro2 championship last year did of course give the team confidence when swapping classes within that championship, however as a driver you have to apply the same ‘new championship’ logic. That means allowing yourself the rounds to debug the truck, relearn its handling characteristics and generally understanding the vehicle all-round. I knew we were making ground as I have delivered a number of ‘fastest laps and ‘pole position starts’ in recent rounds at Thuxton and Donnington, so it was only a matter of time before I was on the podium, and it’s really good to finally be there!’

Race One:

Qualifying P4, placed Freddie on the second line of the grid with all but one of the top running championship contenders behind him. Unperturbed by the aggressive grid that would be looking to come through Freddie, after briefly leading for the first lap settled into second place behind the multi championship winning driver Carl Boardley. Maintaining the position, Freddie pulled away from the pack and secured his first seasons podium of second place.

Race Two:

Qalifiying P3: A collision in the first bend, due to other drivers standards, saw Freddie sustain suspension damage, which made handling an issue, and whilst Freddie was able to complete the race to gain important championship points he had to settle for 13th place.

Race Three:

Starting in P8: The Matt Roach Team, swung into action to ensure Freddie was out for the last race. Having already proved the ‘51 Crowthorne Pickup truck’ had the pace, Freddie did not see starting down the pack as an issue… and apparently he was right as by lap 6 he had picked his way through the pack to once again take second place behind Carl Boardley. Now perhaps he should have settled there, but that’s not really Freddie’s style and in lap 18 he briefly took the lead but had to eventually yield the place and settle for another 2nd place podium just 3/10ths behind the leader.   It was a thrilling drive which saw Barry nearly having a heart attack on the pit wall.

Freddie is currently holding 6th place in the championship and we wish him all the best for the rest of the season.
